Today’s post is written by our guest blogger, Nick Bravos of goDCgo. goDCgo is an initiative of the District Department of Transportation that is designed to help reduce congestion and improve air quality in our nation’s capital through the promotion of sustainable transportation modes. In addition to encouraging the use of trains, buses, bikes and other transportation options with a low environmental impact, goDCgo manages marketing for both Capital Bikeshare and the DC Circulator.
Ever think that you may be addicted to your car?
If you’ve already thought about it, then you probably are. Well, on Saturday, September 22, you’ll have your chance put the car keys down; international Car Free Day challenges millions of motorists around the world to reconsider getting in the driver’s seat for a day. There are many easy and creative options that will get you where you need to go – and we encourage you to take advantage of the efficient public transportation system the DC region has to offer. Last year, over 11,000 people participated, so take the pledge this year (it’s easy!) to go car-free—or at least car-lite—for the day, and help be a part of a movement away from car-dependency. By taking the pledge, you’ll be automatically entered for a chance to win great prizes such as an iPad, a bicycle, SmarTrip cards and more! Already car-free? Great – spread the word! Even if you’re already a lover of car-free transportation, you’re still eligible for these great prizes! But that’s not all–, goDCgo is giving away even more prizes in our own giveaway, including $500 in free groceries from Relay Foods and much more. To enter, head to our giveaway page and just tell us how you get around car-free or car-lite.
Want to participate but don’t know the best way to get around? Visit goDCgo’s website to learn more about your transportation options and use our interactive map to find transit, bike lanes and more near your home or place of work.
There are plenty of great events going on in DC on September 22. Visit our events calendar to learn more including ways to get there without a car. Be sure to consider these family-friendly, car-free activities taking place at the fourth-annual Feet in the Street celebration, put on by The National Park Service (NPS). All programming will be held on Fort Dupont’s 361 acres from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and include:
- 5K Walk/Run to kickoff the event
- guided nature hikes
- rock climbing wall
- physical fitness classes
- community garden tours and vegetable cleaning
- health cooking demonstrations and farmer’s market
- face painting
- free bike rentals, courtesy of Bike and Roll
- Capital Bikeshare test rides and free ride coupons.
So what’re you waiting for? Help make this year’s Car Free Day a success and join an international collaboration of 1,500 cities in 40 countries to pledge a day of car-free travel!
